Freedom Friday: The Purple Purse Challenge

~Support the Movement to End Domestic Violence~

The entire nation is engaged in a dialogue about domestic violence in the aftermath of the Ray Rice incident and the NFL’s response. These events are bringing attention to this national crisis and prompting discussion and advocacy.

This morning, I received a surprising email from Dorri McWhorter, CEO of YWCA Chicago.  The focus of the email was not surprising, with the Y’s mission, I expected them to take immediate action in taking part in the campaign to end domestic violence. After all, it is part of their mission and a key service they have offered since the organization was founded in 1876.

What did surprise me was Dorri’s personal experience with domestic violence. Dorri is a powerful presence. Her confidence, intelligence and grace is immediately evident to all who meet her.  Fortunately, Dorri had a great job and education which enabled her to leave the abusive situation. Many women don’t have this option. That’s where organizations like YWCA Chicago make the critical difference.

As a result of the national media attention, Dorri was asked to appear on CBS Chicago Morning News today to speak about the issue of domestic violence and our participation in the Purple Purse Challenge. (Click here to watch the clip!)

This goes to prove that victims of domestic violence do not fit into one race, gender, culture or socio-economic group.  These are men and women from all walks of life. And yes, YWCA Chicago offers crisis services to both men and women.

The YWCA is working every day to ensure women attain freedom from violence. I hope you’ll consider participating in our Purple Purse Challenge by donating to support their work with domestic violence survivors.

I am proud to support the Purple Purse Challenge.
